My Favorite Supplements To Improve Egg Quality
Every day couples struggle with infertility or difficulty getting pregnant. And although there are tons of resources to assist in tracking ovulation, there’s nothing more frustrating (or disheartening) than seeing a negative pregnancy test result month after month. On top of that, there’s a plethora of information to sift through online about nutrients and supplements that may or may not aid in improving egg quality — in turn, enhancing fertility.
Because it’s such a daunting task — especially for those in the throes of infertility, I’ve covered three of my favorite supplements to improve egg quality. So, whether you’ve been trying to get pregnant for months or you’re looking to proactively improve your egg quality, consider talking with your doctor about one of my favorite supplements to improve egg quality.
Reduce oxidative damage to ovarian follicles with Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).
For the past few years, CoQ10 supplementation for improved fertility has been seeing a boom in popularity. And for good reason — it’s an antioxidant that protects the body’s tissues from the natural aging process. CoQ10 is present in human follicular fluid, however, the concentration decreases with age, which is why CoQ10 may be especially helpful for older women hoping to conceive. Although CoQ10 is found in organ meat, most women opt for supplementation.
Improve follicular development with vitamin D.
There are many women who are deficient in vitamin D long before and well after pregnancy, and this is a problem because vitamin D plays an important role in ovarian function and follicular development. Consider getting your vitamin D levels checked next time you’re at the doctor’s office and supplement accordingly based on where you’re at.
Upgrade your mitochondrial function with N-acetylcysteine (NAC).
Improving and maintaining mitochondrial function gets harder and harder as we age. NAC helps to improve mitochondrial function and overall egg quality when taken daily. In recent years, NAC has been used for female infertility as an antioxidant — especially in older women and in women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Although more research is needed on NAC’s effectiveness in treating infertility, various studies have found that NAC does play a role in improving egg quality.
Talk to your doctor about which supplement is best for you.
While improving your diet and nutrition is a good place to start on your pregnancy journey, targeted supplementation plays an important role too. If you’ve experienced difficulty conceiving, I recommend talking with your doctor about these supplement options. Together you can decide which might be best for your unique pregnancy journey.
